Last year over 500 young people visited the hospital for work experience.

Work experience isn’t all about filing or stuffing envelopes. It is invaluable in finding out more about the world of work; improve on your interpersonal skills; and to get accepted to some college or university courses.

Depending on your interests you might find yourself working on a busy clinic reception, shadowing a pharmacist on their ward round, or watching a cardiac physiologist undertake an electrocardiogram (ECG).

Paola spent her school half-term working in the Finance Department at Guy’s & St. Thomas’ Hospital. Working with the Creditor Payments team she assisted with the processing of invoices for payment (this is when we owe money for goods or services).

Paola said “what I enjoyed most was labelling the invoices so they could be scanned. I loved using the software and learning about its features. The colleagues I worked with were very focused. Everyone was doing their work with a great deal of concentration which motivated me to work hard as well”
